Wind Energy

Rochester, NY has a strong potential supplier base that includes more than 60 companies with related expertise to manufacture components of the wind turbine.

Gleason Works, one of Rochester's oldest manufacturers, is a leader in the design, application, testing, analysis and production of gears. Gleason manufacturing equipment is used by Hansen Transmissions – one of the world's leading gear manufacturers for wind turbines.

The Rochester Region is home to the 10-turbine, 6.6-megawatt Wethersfield Wind Farm in Wyoming County, which has been in operation since 2000.

In addition, several other wind farm installation projects are in development in the region, including the Dairy Hills Wind Farm in Wyoming County, which calls for 68 two-megawatt turbines to provide electricity to 40,000 households.

Greater Rochester Enterprise created a formal partnership with Buffalo Niagara Enterprise and Niagara Economic Devleopment Corporation Canada to promote our super region as a competitive location for wind energy. Key assets are: bi-national location, market access, existing supply chains, a well-developed transportation infrastructure, the skilled and affordable workforce, approximately 60 colleges and universities, and workforce development programs. More information on this partnership may be found at www.CanAmWindEnergy.com.
